Foundation Appoints Vanessa Whang as General Counsel

SACRAMENTO – February 25, 2009

The Foundation for California Community Colleges has hired Vanessa W. Whang as its General Counsel, a newly created position that will oversee the Foundation’s corporate legal initiatives. Her appointment was effective February 9.

Ms. Whang joined the Foundation from the Sacramento office of Carlton, DiSante & Freudenberger LLC, where she was a partner for over three years and oversaw the Foundation’s legal matters on a consultant basis. She boasts 12 years of legal experience, primarily in labor and employment law, including several years as an associate with Carlton, DiSante & Freudenberger LLC. Ms. Whang also worked as an associate with Porter, Scott, Weiberg & Delehant for four years, where she practiced law as a generalist and represented a number of public entities. In her role as General Counsel at the Foundation, she will lead legal initiatives, particularly in the areas of contracting, nonprofit transactions, intellectual property, human resources and other corporate issues.

“Vanessa not only brings a wealth of knowledge in labor law, but she is also familiar with the Foundation, its history and programs, making her an excellent fit for our organization,” said Foundation President Paul Lanning, Ed.D. “In her role as General Counsel, I am confident that Vanessa will help guide the Foundation to ensure it continues to be successful in its programs and corporate initiatives.”

Lanning cites the Foundation’s growing and diverse programs and services as the impetus for bringing legal counsel in‐house. “Our Foundation has experienced many changes in recent years, including entering into new territories such as philanthropy. A General Counsel will ensure we continue to conduct business according to the letter of the law, while at the same time reducing our external legal fees, which is an important advantage in today’s economy.”

A graduate of University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law and University of California, San Diego, Ms. Whang is a member of the Women Lawyers of Sacramento and of the Sacramento County Bar Association. Previously, she served for several years on the board of Women Lawyers of Sacramento, including the development and grants committees.
