CCGI supports English language learners

California College Guidance Initiative Supports English Language Learners

SACRAMENTO, California—June 24, 2014—Budget cuts in California have reduced the number of programs available to assist English language learners in furthering their education and improving their language skills, but according to an article in the Center for Digital Education, technology solutions are creating new opportunities to help these students. CCGI was created to ensure that all students have access to a systematic baseline of guidance and support as they plan, prepare, and figure out how to pay for college, and offers user-friendly technology tools for students, parents, and counselors. These tools include CaliforniaColleges.edu, a college preparation website that provides information on all three public higher education systems in California, and a mobile app that pushes important deadlines and notifications throughout the college planning process. These tools are a valuable resource for English language learners and other students who may not have other sources of support. "That definitely has great implications when, unfortunately, there just aren't enough people who can fill the role of counselors," Sarah Hooker, co-author of a report on California immigrant student success from the Migration Policy Institute, told the Center for Digital Education.
