Established in 1977 in San Francisco, The Bernard Osher Foundation (Osher Foundation) seeks to improve quality of life through support for higher education and the arts. The Osher Foundation provides postsecondary scholarship funding to colleges and universities across the nation, with special attention to reentry students. It also benefits programs in integrative medicine in the United States and Sweden and supports 123 Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes, a growing national learning network for seasoned adults. Finally, the Osher Foundation provides grants to an array of performing arts organizations, museums, and selected educational programs in Northern California and in Mr. Osher’s native state of Maine.

The Osher Foundation’s lead gift of $25 million to the California Community Colleges campaign was followed by a matching sum of $14.2 million, making it the organization's most significant commitment to date. As part of this initiative, the Osher Foundation also pledged an additional $20 million to University of California and California State University institutions that did not previously administer Osher-supported scholarship programs in order to establish endowed scholarships at these institutions for students transferring from California Community Colleges.
