Maro’Jene had been working in the restaurant industry for a while, but knew that she needed to get more training so she could open up more opportunities and move to a new career. She had always wanted to open her own event planning business, so she decided to take the first step by starting a Computer Skills and Office Procedures training program offered through Opportunity Junction in Contra Costa County.
Through Opportunity Junction, she was a Fresh Success participant from November 2017 to April 2018. “Without the help of Fresh Success, finding someone to take me to training or finding the funds for transportation would have been an everyday worry,” she said. Fresh Success supported Maro’Jene’s training by connecting her with transportation assistance to attend classes, arranging CalFresh benefits, and providing benefits counseling sessions.
During training, Maro’Jene worked as an administrative intern. Having completed her training program, she started her new career in office administration working as an event planner at Los Medanos Community College. In addition to her event planning work, Maro’Jene is a Career Center Coordinator for Opportunity Junction. “My work now is exactly the career field I had in mind when I began my training,” she said.
Thanks to a flexible schedule, she continues to pursue her goal of opening her own event planning business. “The skills I have learned recently will undoubtedly help me with this goal,” she said. By combining three forms of support: transportation, CalFresh, and benefits counseling, Fresh Success helped to put Maro’Jene’s goals within reach.
