Dr. John C. Hernandez serves as President of Irvine Valley College.  An educator for more than 35 years, Dr. Hernandez has been in leadership roles at both two-and four-year institutions including President and Vice President of Student Services at Santiago Canyon College, Associate Vice President and Dean of Students at Cal Poly Pomona, and Associate Dean at Santa Ana College.

Dr. Hernandez  currently serves as co-chair of the Community College League of California LGBTQ+ Caucus that was formally established in November of 2021 to create community, advocacy, professional development, and mentorship opportunities. Additionally, he serves on the statewide Affordability, Food & Housing Access Taskforce. 

Dr. Hernandez earned his Ph.D. in college student personnel administration from the University of Maryland, a master’s degree in counseling from California State University, Long Beach, and a bachelor’s degree in sociology from California State University, Fullerton.  He earned an associate in arts degree at Fullerton College. 

As a first-generation immigrant who is the product of the California Community College system, Dr. Hernandez knows first-hand how lives are transformed through education.
