The Smog Check Referee program has helped support the training of hundreds of future smog technicians through the Student Technician Training Program (STTP).
This 300-hour paid training program was developed with guidance from the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) and several Career and Technical Education (CTE) subject matter experts, and includes a combination of extensive hands-on exercises and regular quizzes and examinations. In addition to real-world paid training experience working alongside Referees and interacting with consumers, the STTP trains students in the areas of safety, communication, and administration. This additional training helps to ensure that the students learn the essential skills necessary to become competent, high performing professional technicians in today’s automotive test and repair industry. Each site trains up to four students, ensuring that students receive the individual attention needed to flourish.
