Building upon the Student Journey Mapping project and driven by the Vision for Success commitment to “always design and decide with the student in mind,” the Student Centered Design Lab facilitates a seamless, equitable educational journey for all students.
Historically, student-facing technology and campaign design has been fragmented. Designers have had limited access to student input and student centered design resources to guide their development. Using agile methodology, the Student Centered Design Lab improves student success by providing student-centered research, design, guidance, and evaluation services for new and existing student-facing digital products, communication campaigns, and policymaking projects. Through deeper understanding of existing usability barriers and inclusion of diverse student voices throughout the development and refinement processes, both real and perceived student barriers to success are minimized.
The Student Centered Design Lab serves as a central repository for systemwide, data-informed design best practices, protocols, and certification principles. Additionally, it incorporates ADA-compliant and equity-focused frameworks. Student-facing tools can be aligned through shared design principles and a knowledge base rooted in behavioral science. Under the Chancellor’s Office guidance and housed within the Foundation, the Student Centered Design Lab launched in 2019 thanks to generous seed funding from the College Futures Foundation.
