California Clinical Placement System Releases Major Enhancements to Increase Student Access to Nursing Placement

New “MyCCPS” app will transform the clinical placement process, empowering students to navigate nursing careers with ease

March, 20, 2024 – Sacramento, CA – The Foundation for California Community Colleges (FoundationCCC) proudly announces the launch of “MyCCPS,” a new mobile application aimed to enhance the landscape of nursing and allied health education. Funded in part by the Nursing Education Investment Grants Program (NEIF), the app is designed as an advanced component of the larger Centralized Clinical Placement System (CCPS), and aims to simplify and streamline the intricate process of securing clinical placements with hospitals.

In response to growing demand for healthcare professionals nationwide, MyCCPS aims to increase school, hospital, and student interactions by prioritizing convenience and ensuring students’ ability to complete clinical requirements and documentation from any digital device. The app specifically addresses geographical barriers and socio-economic constraints by allowing students to upload items such as attestation paperwork, view instructions and requirements for placements, and view complete and pending clinical rotation details from any location, at any time.

Further, MyCCPS fosters collaboration between education institutions and clinical providers by facilitating direct communication and progress monitoring. The app streamlines compliance procedures and expedites turnaround times for rotations and attestations, and ultimately equips more individuals with the skills needed to address nursing gaps.

“By leveraging technology solutions and centralizing information, we are empowering students and institutions alike to navigate the complexities of clinical placement with great efficiency,” said Emily Ekenstam, Executive Director of Technology Solutions at FoundationCCC. “FoundationCCC remains committed to providing innovative solutions that address the critical need for healthcare work-based experiences and help meet the future demands for the nursing and allied health students to join the workforce.”

Currently, MyCCPS is piloting in the central valley, with a specific focus on the area of Fresno, California. The launch of the app is also accompanied by recent updates to the online version of the CCPS tool, which makes attestations and document review faster and easier for school administrators, allowing quicker turnaround times. These updates provide a regional perspective on placement data and help to quickly identify untapped clinical opportunities.

Established in 2005, CCPS was engineered as a direct response to the nursing shortage in the Bay Area. Developed through a partnership between the California Health Care Foundation, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, and HealthImpact, the tool successfully doubled student clinical hours in the region, with a 47% increase in new student nursing enrollment by 2009. Following, the tool was expanded to a national audience and in 2019 was updated to include tracking compliance and student rotations.
