Julie Keiffer-Lewis

Department Chair, African American Studies

Dr. Julie Keiffer-Lewis (she/her) currently serves as the Department Chair of African American Studies at De Anza College. She created the curriculum for and teaches the first Introduction to LGBTQ+ Studies course in the history of the Foothill/De Anza District and she served on the California Community College Ethnic Studies Taskforce during the 2021-22 and 2022-23 academic years. 

Dr. Keiffer-Lewis is a queer Black feminist, scholar, instructor, activist, writer, photographer, curriculum designer, program developer, educational coach, and historical systems analyst. She specializes in LGBTQQIA+ communities, communities of color, and women with a focus on intersectionality, systems of oppression, privilege, healing strategies, and understanding the importance of obtaining individual agency within institutions.

Dr. Keiffer-Lewis holds degrees from Modesto Junior College, San Francisco State University, and Mills College.
