Advancing Equity for AANHPI Students Recognized in D.C.

Last month, California’s groundbreaking efforts to advance equity and access for underserved Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) students were spotlighted in Washington D.C., at the U.S. Department of Education’s Strengthening Institution Division’s Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions (AANAPISI) Project Directors’ Meeting.

AANAPISI Directors from across the nation gathered to discuss the Federal AANAPISI designation, learn new developments affecting securing designation and eligibility, and explore the landscape of the Minority Serving Institution (MSI) designation. The conversation highlighted the collective work of innovative programs throughout the state, including FoundationCCC’s AANHPI Student Achievement Program, and featured insights from key leaders driving change:

  • Anthony Mariano Amboy, Director, AANHPI Student Achievement Program, FoundationCCC
  • Dr. Kirin Amiling Macapugay, Vice Chair, California Commission on Asian and Pacific Islander American Affairs
  • Dr. Timothy Fong, Executive Director, AANHPI Student Achievement Program (CSU ASAP), California State University

The presentation showcased California’s strategic approach, backed by the state’s education code, which supports higher education equity through a sustained annual investment of $8 million for both the California Community Colleges and California State University systems. This initiative reflects a shared commitment in alignment with the Chancellor’s Office Vision 2030 priorities to close equity gaps and create a more inclusive academic environment for all students.

FoundationCCC serves as the AANHPI Student Achievement Program’s Central Office, allowing greater flexibility in assisting colleges in developing statewide partnerships, disaggregated data, advocacy efforts, and services. The program works collaboratively with the Commission on Asian and Pacific Islander American Affairs and the Chancellor’s Office to ensure the program makes a meaningful, positive impact on underserved students’ lives.
