Exploring Equitable Pathways to Careers in the Legal and Justice System

Students from Merritt College, Delta College, Sacramento City College, and San Jose City College recently experienced a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the legal field during a California LAW Pathways (Cal LAW) led visit to the San Francisco Superior Court.

The day-long event featured panels on criminal law, civil law, and family law, where judges, lawyers, bailiffs, and court reporters shared their experiences and insights into diverse career paths within the justice system. Participants observed live hearings, gaining firsthand knowledge of courtroom proceedings and the legal process.

One highlight of the day was meeting the Honorable Judge Suzanne Ramos Bolanos, the first Latina judge to serve at the San Francisco Superior Court, inspiring students with her groundbreaking journey. As the daughter of immigrants from Chile and Peru, her experience deeply resonated with participants, highlighting the power of perseverance and representation in the legal field. The day also included an admissions panel with UC Law San Francisco, equipping students with valuable information about pursuing a legal education.

This transformative experience was made possible by the Elimination of Bias Committee, including Kelly Matayoshi, Partner at Farella Braun + Martel; the Honorable Judge Suzanne Ramos Bolanos; and the Honorable Judge Maria Evangelista, with sponsorship from Farella Braun + Martel.

As a FoundationCCC Collaborative Impact Partner, Cal LAW creates pathways for students of diverse backgrounds to enter the legal profession, supporting their journey from high school through community college,  four-year institutions and law schools. By fostering diversity within the legal field and justice system, Cal LAW aligns closely with our strategic goal to expand student access and success as well as educational and career outcomes by promoting student-centered resources and tools.
