New Podcast “Empowering Individuals Through Hands-On Work Experience”

In a recent Future of Work podcast, Tim Aldinger, Vice President of Workforce and Climate Innovation at FoundationCCC, discussed the important role work-based learning programs at community colleges play in preparing students for careers.

Aldinger shares how integrating real-world experience with education provides unprecedented opportunities. Aligned with California Community Colleges Chancellor Sonya Christian’s Vision 2030, Aldinger highlighted how California community colleges champion workforce pathways programs, such as credit for prior learning, which recognizes individuals’ life experiences as valuable academic currency. This program allows workers, parents, veterans, and professionals to translate their existing skills into college credits, breaking down traditional barriers to higher education. Programs like these are emerging as critical bridges between education and industry, creating equitable workforce pathways for traditionally underserved students.

Reflecting on his own experience, Aldinger shared how integral and transformative on-the-job learning was in his early adult life:

“I was part of what was called RealCorps, the regional ecosystem Applied Learning Corps. It was a transformative moment in my life. That program, as most AmeriCorps programs and core programs, is very much steeped in work-based learning. You go out, and you, in this case, build trails. That was such a special and meaningful experience for me. It brought community, it helped me gain confidence, and it got me re-engaged in higher education and so I am so grateful for that.” — Tim Aldinger, Vice President of Workforce and Climate Innovation at FoundationCCC

In the podcast, Aldinger highlights the broader benefits of real-world learning, including workforce development tailored to regional needs, industry-aligned skills, opportunities for both personal and professional growth, and greater accessibility for diverse learners.

FoundationCCC’s workforce development programs focus on creating accessible, equitable career pathways, particularly in emerging fields like climate resilience. By offering solutions to reach diverse populations, these programs open doors for underserved communities throughout the state.
