Over the last three years, the California Community Colleges have grown a robust infrastructure to support LGBTQ+ students statewide. Across California’s community colleges, expanded resources are strengthening a sense of belonging and creating lasting positive change.

In 2023, the Chancellor’s Office launched a historic $10 million annual investment ($30 million over three years) dedicated to LGBTQ+ student success, with FoundationCCC administering this work. Since the inception:

• Colleges with dedicated LGBTQ+ personnel have grown from 48 to more than 90, nearly doubling capacity for mentorship, programming, and direct student support.
• Pride Centers have expanded from 50 to 77, with 13 more in development, creating visible, affirming spaces where students can access resources and build community.
• More than 100 colleges now host Lavender Graduations, and over 150 educators have been trained in LGBTQ+ student support.

What makes this investment distinct is its focus on sustainability. Colleges have used the funding to build lasting capacity by training faculty and staff, addressing basic needs, expanding culturally responsive mental health services, and embedding LGBTQ+ inclusion into the everyday student experience.

The progress has been transformative, but the need for these services remains as crucial as they did from the beginning. The commitment continues with the leadership of the Chancellor’s Office and the colleges themselves. This initiative is funded through Assembly Bill 132 and administered by the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, in partnership with the Foundation for California Community Colleges.
