Reducing Food Insecurity for Students in California

On October 24, Fresh Success providers from across California convened at FoundationCCC in Sacramento for their annual collaborative meeting to discuss innovative strategies for strengthening CalFresh Employment and Training (E&T) programs in our communities.
Led by FoundationCCC’s Fresh Success team, the event brought together over 60 attendees from 28 California community colleges and community-based organizations to engage in peer-to-peer learning. Participants discussed best practices on connecting more low-income Californians, particularly community college students, with vital food benefits, employment and training services, and support systems that will not only alleviate food insecurity but also help them toward enhanced economic mobility.
A highlight of the event was the success stories shared by Fresh Success partners at Gavilan College, Glendale Community College, Opportunity Junction, and 3Strands Global Foundation. These inspiring stories showcased the life-changing impact of these programs.
“It has made my life as a student easier. It has supported me in my academic journey, and the financial support has made my experience with certain financial burdens less stressful so I can focus on school.” — Participant, Fresh Success
Fresh Success providers statewide, in partnership with FoundationCCC and the local county welfare department, work to reduce financial barriers that often prevent individuals from accessing education and training. Through this collaboration, students receive critical support, including transportation, textbooks and course supplies, testing fees, internet access, emergency rent assistance, and dependent care. These efforts enhance E&T programs and build stronger, more resilient communities that empower students to thrive.
