Statewide Collaboration Helps Diversify California’s Physician Workforce

The California Medicine Scholars Program (CMSP) recently hosted its annual in-person convening, uniting partners from across the state to strengthen strategies for diversifying the physician workforce and expanding access to care in underserved communities. Over two days, the event featured stories of innovation, collaboration, and impact that are shaping the future of healthcare in California.

The convening brought together all four Regional Hubs of Healthcare Opportunity, Advisory Council members, philanthropic partners, and cross-sector leaders. Together, they examined the program’s progress, explored pathways for statewide expansion, and aligned on long-term sustainability strategies. CMSP highlighted the transformative results the program has experienced since its launch, including service to more than 600 students through collaborative efforts between community colleges, universities, medical schools, and community health partners. Sessions at the event showcased innovative student support models, systems-change strategies, and data-driven approaches that are reshaping the state’s healthcare talent pipeline.

Facilitated discussions and presentations created space for meaningful cross-regional collaboration, visioning, and shared problem-solving, showcasing CMSP’s role as a growing statewide movement committed to equity, opportunity, and the future of California’s healthcare workforce.

CMSP partners with medical schools at UC Davis, UC Riverside, UCSF-Fresno, and UC San Diego to recruit students from community colleges in their area. Through comprehensive academic support, mentorship, and enrichment opportunities, the program seeks to nurture a new generation of future physicians equipped to address the pressing health challenges of our time.

CMSP is currently supported through funding from the Department of Healthcare Access and Information (HCAI) and generous philanthropic support from the California Wellness Foundation, California Health Care Foundation, and the California Endowment, with FoundationCCC serving as the program’s Central Office. By supporting underrepresented students, CMSP is accelerating better medical care for all.
